9.2 miles of real running this morning. Pain free!!! Well almost- there's just a little bit of soreness in my legs throughout from the elliptical the last few day. But other than that I felt great and now I can't stop smiling from ear to ear.

What a roller coaster this last week has been for me and my wife. At one point I really thought I was done running or at least racing for sure. I tend to get a little excited... Anyways at the end of it all maybe it was for a reason. See I've been toying with the idea of converting my car over to natural gas. But it's pretty expensive and yad, yad, yad. So when I got hurt last week I decided I was going to buy a mountain bike and ride like 40 miles a day to maintain fitness the best I could. That led me to think that I really don't need a car. Mik'L and I are in a situation where I don't really have a lot of responsibility and could very easily use a bike to get around. So that's what I'm doing. Selling my car (I love my car by the way) and replacing it with a mountain bike. I'm excited to see how it will help my fitness. I'll continue to hit the mileage I've been doing (pre Ogden) and also peddle my way around town. We or I really am not like one of those activist crazy type people. I just don't use my car much. In the last two year I've only put 16,000 miles on my car- a lot of those miles were taking it on trips and stuff that we can easily do all those miles in Mik'L's car. So there you have it- I'm running again and happy and there is a sweet mountain bike out there that will have a new home soon!

(Blue Cumulus 367.6)

4.1 mile run from my house down to the bike store (Sunset Cycle). I did it. I bought my machine and she is a beauty. I got a Giant (Reign 2) .

What a fun bike! I've researched things to death and was in between 2 other bikes but finally decided to go with this one. I love it! I rode 15.8 miles in (1hr 16 min's) back home from the store. Right now I'm not sure how or (if) exactly I will convert my bike miles to the blog so I'm leaving them off for now. It was a good ride 13 of it was basically up from the river back into Washington and up above GS and the bike rolled like a champ.

For the moment I've decided how I'll count my bike miles. I'll use a 1 to 4 ratio. I feel this is more than fair to myself for the effort and time involved. I don't have a lite speedy road bike- my bike with everything I have on it weights 33 lbs. Pretty beefy compared to anything on the road.

So for my ride this afternoon I'll give myself 3.95 miles of easy running....This is almost half of what I was using for the cross training miles. That formula was every 10 min's of activity was worth 1 miles.

Welcome to the one-car club. Whether or not you are environmentally-minded, you will save money on gas, maintenance, and insurance, plus become better at consolidating trips. Stacy and I have shared one car during our six years of marriage, and have put 51,000 miles on our Subaru in 5 years. I look forward to keeping the Subi for 200,000 miles and then passing it down to our son in 16 years. :-) Then we may get a new car.

Glad you got to run today - although a 9 miler probably isn't easing back into it!

From Jon on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 11:19:51

Glad to hear your leg is better.

Marci and I had one car for 3 years, till we had a kid and our 2 door, no A/C car didn't cut it anymore. Now I have the old car and only put ~3000 miles per year on it- maybe I'll run more this year than I drive that car! But you sure do save money!

I have a 1996 GMC truck with only 64,000 miles on it, our 2000 mini van has over 84,000 miles. So I hear you about not using 2 cars as much. However, I don't have the biking option in the Idaho winters.

Keep up the strong running, glad it is returning to pain free!

Wow you guys don't use your car's either. Jon 3,000 miles a year is very little, and Jeff a 96' with only 64,000. My father-in-laws 07'Ford Expedition has like 50k on it...just to see the other side of the spectrum.

Paul- the money savings will be great too. You also forgot registration on your list of savings.

Well anyways I hope it works out.

Dave I know 9 miles this morning sounds like a lot to be jumping back into. But the other day when April worked on my leg- well once she was done it was like I never had an injury to begin with. I could have ran home from her house after the massage.

Oh Clyde, I get a kick out of you! You are truly passionate about running! Good luck with the mountain bike thing it can only help your fitness.

But don't forget your losing the two car discount that you get on your car insurance. Sorry its what I do for a living, I had to through that in...

From Clay on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 14:06:18

Sorry I meant to write "throw that in".

I'm an idiot:-)

From Superfly on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 18:05:04

Clay do you do health insurance? If so my wife wants me to find something different than what we have.

Don't worry about the grammar thing on the blog. This is a free zone to mis-spell, leave out punctuation and all sorts of other junk.

Clyde I have a 2002 Sliverado pick-up that still looks brand new that I dual exhausted it and put a flow master muffler and a KN filter in it for more power and better gas mileage. I only have 44,000 miles on it. I bought it about 4 years ago when it had 29,000 miles on it. I just drive it to work and back or when I'm hauling my atv's around.

Clyde what kind of car do you have, and how many miles?

From MichelleL on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 18:43:59

We were a one car family for our first 6 years of marriage, including over two years with kids. Even if you aren't an activist I'd like to thank you for making a choice that benefits all of us :) We should all be so strong. Be careful riding around town, though, so many drivers are always in a rush.

Kory it's a 2005 Mitsubishi Galant with 38,000 miles. Let me try something.

You can view it here:

Michelle- Even though I'm not an activist it does feel good. I can't stand to give any more money to the gas companies... within reason.

Steve Hooper has done it with kids (now 4) for as long as I've known him. So we'll give it a shoot. Worst case is that I have to buy another car in 6 months... but hey I still got a sweet bike out of the deal.

Kory I forgot to say that I loaded some more pictures of it but it will take 12hrs for them to get posted.
