Bummer!

I ran with the group until around 8 miles then Logan and Seth pulled ahead. Sasha and I worked together until 12 when my stomach started cramping up and I just should have dropped out.

I got this mean cramp and I just thought it would work it's way out. I rememembered getting one in STG this year and it worked it's self out within 4-5 miles. But this one was more intense and within two miles it had me road-side doing a Sasha style #2 bathroom stop (I've never had to do that in a race). Then the pain just never went away. Anytime I'd try to push the pace I'd almost double over with a cramp. I tried holding my side but that didn't work either. Honestly I don't have a clue what it was from. I followed a simmilar pre-race schedule with food and stuff.... anyways it sucked and now it's over.

I thought coming into this race that a sub 2:30 was well within reach. I feel like if I'd have not had the stomach issues that would have been totally doable. Basically from mile 12 on I never got back in ANY kind of groove. I'm soo suprised someone didn't catch me because I just stopped caring about time- In fact at the aid station at around 18 I almost pulled out of the race but decided to just limp in so my mother-in-law wouldn't be waiting and worring the whole time.

Bottom line is we all have bad races. I've never had a bad marathon before and now it's over and I can move on.

Here are the lame splits-

1. 5:41

7. 5:34- Rolling along with Seth, Logan, and Sasha

8. 5:40- Seth and Logan gap Sasha

9. 5:51- Sasha and I trade lead until 12 when I fall off the planet

10. 5:49- Interesting here Sasha starts doing these loud moan's and grunts for like 2 miles. It actually started to kind of be bothersome (No offense Sasha) But they were loud and frequent.

11. 5:56

12. 6:00- Cramp starts almost right at the mile marker

13. 6:08- trying to breath and work through it

14. 6:05- by the time we get to the bottom of the "major hill" am going slow and scouting out a potty spot.

15. 6:48- This must be my potty mile. I stop here and this is were I totally lose track of Sasha.

16. 5:53

17. 6:00

18. 5:50- Almost stop here but push on. I couldn't muster anything on the good downhill because when I'd speed up it would really start to hurt.

19. 6:01

20. 6:06

21. 6:05

22. 6:00- blah!

23. 5:48- Some good downhill here and I try to push just to see what happens.

24. 6:16- Now the tummy is really sore.

25. 6:29- Dodging halfers on in to my glorious finish!

26. 6:23

last portion was at 6:05 (what a kick)

I had a great time up there with Logan and company at the pasta party. Thanks Logan. We even got to sleep at Logans grandparents house up by the start. Logan and I spooned all night as we shared a bed. (maybe my problem during the race) J/K.

Did a little over a mile warm-up with the boys and had 3 quality potty stops before the race. (I should have been ready to go!)

Overall I really liked the course. Very pretty and a good running layout. It was great weather too. I'd like to try it again when I was having a good day.

Way to tough it out and finish. I am sure you are bummed out, but you gave it your best effort and things just didn't work out. I am sure many people would agree with me that 4th place on a bad day is still pretty sweet! Lots of success ahead for you....

Way to gut it out Clyde! Sometimes you can prepare all you want and it just doesn't happen. It happens to me in Golf all the time, I can prepare and be hitting the ball great and then it just doesn't happen and its not there on that particular day. And I have learned the hard way that there's just not much you can do about it.

But I like your attitude accept it, forget about it and move on. To the next hole so to speak! (Golf analogy)

Clyde - there are reasons nobody caught you:

a) Ogden is not as fast as it looks. 2:30 in Ogden in ideal conditons is worth 2:23 in St. George.

b) It was warm, which means stomach issues, leg cramps, overall dehydration overheating, and trouble in general.

I would guess this performance is worth 2:26-2:27 in St. George on a good day.

Nice way to gut it out and get 4th. I was trying to track you down...if you wouldn't have had such a gap at 10M, I might have had a chance. :-)

It took guts to finish it out. You will have some great races in the near future.

Clyde, I had several running buddies in the marathon, not elite runners, but, they all suffered in the heat also. You finished, lived for another day. Also, 400 commando points for 4th place and 1,000 for not kicking your dog.

Don't be to hard on yourself (that is what I am trying to do) marathons are sooooo long and full of twists and turns. Look to the next:) Tough course, hot temps and stomach cramps make for an extra long race. Sorry to hear, I think you did great.

Clyde, I know you weren't happy but I still think you ran a great race! Most of your "blah" miles were still around 6:00 pace and you finished 4th! If that is a bonker race for you, then your good races will be amazing! Chalk it up to the spooning, dehydration (?) and the heat, and be ready to regain your mojo on your next race!

Made me laugh about the Sasha noises!

Thanks to all of you for being so nice. I'll try and blog around a little tomorrow afternoon when I get back home. It's nice that we have such a strong blogging community to share these memmories with. I'm not sure what was up wiht the stomach but it still hurt well into the evening right under my ribs on both sides.

The good news is that I should have a faster than normal recovery because I didn't hammer the second half. Bring on WBR!

You just need more practice at the potty break thing! You won't lose as much time and won't sweat it as much. I'm sorry you were in pain but it should make your next marathon feel like a cake walk. If you can survive and finish this one so well you'll be able to smash future ones. You did a great job toughing through it.

Clyde 2:35 on a bad day, with stomach issues, and you still finished 4th really is good. Because you proved you've got the mental toughness to win a very big marathon in the future. I'm glad you finished because this gives us all something we can think about when one of us has it tough in a race and know we can overcome it like you did.

I think it is better to finish then not to when possible. It teaches us more than if we were to drop out like how to push through it in the next one when we fell like crap. Because that perfect marathon only comes along once in a blue moon so we have to train ourselves to push trough the rest. You have great potential.

Clyde, I wish I had your mental toughness and motivation, I can't even talk myself out of a hot fudge sundae. Even with terrible stomach cramps, you pushed through the pain because you were thinking that I would be a nervous wreck if you didn't show up at the finish line, hello....you were right!

You are surrounded by a great support group with the bloggers, even though I think all runners suffer from slight to major mental illness, they all seem like very nice people.

If humans were supposed to run over 26 miles, we would have been born with 4 legs.

I enjoyed watching from the finish line, but would have liked it better if the marathon runners wouldn't have had to cross the finish with the half marathon runners. It was too confusing for the spectators.

Thanks for including me in your Ogden Marathon weekend, it was fun!
