Garmin lost signal due to the heavy overcast along the way around the 19th mile- so here is what I have and it could be off-

The race started off well after we took shelter in the school at the starting line and we stayed very warm and dry dispite what was going on outside. We were right up front just a couple rows back of where the elite guys were warming up so it was fun to watch the race start. Almost first thing we were passed by guys going out at like 5 min pace... bad news later for them. Tryed to run within myself even though I knew we were running the first part pretty fast and wonderd how it would hit us later. Felt great at the half and started thinking about trying to PR and run a 2:34 or 35. From 13 to 17 things went great and I was suprised at how good I felt. All the while we were hanging with a pack of about 15 guys trying to draft when we could. Then at 17 or so we had to drop them and try and stay in good position. Also at this point we start our battle with the hills. Last year they didn't seem to bother me and if the wind hadn't bee so bad I think I would have been sitting really good this year- however the combo kicked our butts! Pace went our the window and we just tryed to keep moving forward. From there it pounds us up past 21 or whenever the hills are finally over. Somewhere around 20 on a meaty hill Dave falls off my pace and I don't find out until around 22. From 20 on in I felt horrible and just tryed to hang of for dear life. Although the hills are gone the wind is not and I'm just sick of it. Legs really starting to feel done. I try and pick a few more stragglers off and make my way to the finish. Good thing because if 3 more guys beat me I'm our of the top 100. Kind of had that as a back of the mind goal going into the race.

17.6:19 The start of the hills and also the wind really strats to pound us. Still working together.

18.6:48 Hills and wind!

19.8:34 Around this time the garmin started going crazy so this could be off although the hills with the wind are almost stopping me in my tracks.

So I'm disappointed about the Garmin thing. I wanted to come check it all out. I'd really like to know my last 3 mile splits.

Really happy about the race. Two goals comming in- Run under 2:40 and finish in top 100. So I got a nice birthday present. I'm 28 today.

I feel that had this been in St. George in good conditions I could have been really close to 2:30. I think I could have finished the way I started. So we will see how things go this summer. Big thanks to Dave for being there. I had fun working together and couldn't have done it without his help.

After the race both of us spent about an hour in the med tent. I had a temp of 94 and he was down to 91. Both of us were struggling to walk and very close to hypothermia. Too cold for me. I guess I can move on and not come back to Boston unless someone is paying me to race it! Joke...

How did the race go beyond the numbers? How did you feel? How was the weather?

From Dustin Ence on Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 16:13:38

Great job guys! I knew you both would turn in great performances regardless of the weather. The hardwork you have been putting in is going to pay off even bigger this fall at St. George. I was inspired by your guys performance and I went ahead and signed up for the Ogden Marathon a few minutes ago, I might not be in the best shape, but I need to do another marathon soon to get me excited for a summer of training.

Clyde-Amazing performance! Way to go! Kendra and I were following you guys all morning on the net. It was exciting to see how well both of you were doing. I'm glad to hear that the weather didn't get you too bad and you were able to recover fairly quickly in the med tent. Once again, Amazing Performance for the both of you.

I did fale to mention it rained most of the race and was around 40 degrees. We were soaked-shoes, socks, and everything else wet.

Clyde,

Smart race plan. (use the crowd to shield you form the wind.) Looking at the results while you were running was impressive. you and Dave really pulled together. Did you guys wear your tights. your both probably pretty chapped! comgratulations. You guys are awesome.

Clyde - your splits by 5 K are on the Boston Marathon website. Congratulations on making top 100, and a PR effort equivalent. I think it is worth at least 2:30 in St. George on a good day. You might have a shot for a qualifier with the right kind of training, sleep, and diet between now and then.

If I were you, with the current prize structure I would not go back to Boston unpaid unless you are 90% sure you would win, or in other words, your workouts predict 2:05 in St. George.

Great race to both of you, I watched it on the telly, glad the weather did not get you down, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY. See you in St George in a week.

Awesome run! I have been waiting to hear what happenend back there, and finally got results from Bostons' website. Glad you are still alive and that you didn't freeze to death. Congrats on breaking the top 100.

From Chad on Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 17:39:40

Top 100 in the Boston Marathon is an awesome accomplishment. You should be very proud. Happy Birthday and keep up the great work. You're an animal!

From the SL Tribune

Clyde Behunin of St. George was the first Utahn to cross the finish line in the 111th running of the Boston Marathon.

The 28-year old finished 98th overall, in a time of 2 hours, 29.15 minutes. Nicole Hugie, 22, of Taylorsville finished in 3:05:38, the first Utah woman to complete the 26.2 mile race.

More than 300 Utahns competed in the historic marathon, which this year was run in difficult conditions - a nor'easter full of driving rains and below-average temperatures.

Kenya's Robert Cheruiyo repeated as the men's champion, crossing the finish line in 2:14:13, which was the slowest time in 30 years.

On the women's side, Lidiya Grigoryeva of Russia crossed first, in 2:29:18.

David Holt, 29, Washington, placed 129th as the second Utah male to finish the race, crossing in a time of 2:30:30 and 42-year old Molly Behunin, 42, of Ogden was the second Utah woman to complete the race in 3:17:45.

Nice job. Get warm and get ready for sub 2:30 at St. George.

Clyde,

Awesome race. I had to follow the race on the website and read about the horrible conditions. I am amazed that you were within a couple minutes of your marathon PR in such nasty conditions - sounds like you're definitely in shape for a 2:30. Boston is still my dream, but I don't know how excited I would have been to run in conditions like that. BTW, I read that the Mass. State police had considered cancelling the marathon due to fears that the nor'easter that hit NY/NJ and some of the other east coast states would cause thunder and lightning in Boston. Happy birthday.

From Maria on Tue, Apr 17, 2007 at 16:45:15

Great race, Clyde! This are very impressive times for you and Dave. You should be flying come St. George and may even break 2:30 if conditions are good. Enjoy your accomplishments, and Happy Birthday!
