Not theĀ  most valiant effort today. Ran the first 7 or so good then got hung out to dry and just didn't go. PR'd on the course but also on hitting the #2 potty FIVE times before the race and over 15 for the day. I had some serious stomach issues going on. Why? Just some thoughtless food intake the day before. Bean dip? Fat Boy ice cream sandwich, Country time s(traight suger drink), cherry pie, cookies.... and on and on. I just left my brain in STG and ate whatever all the way up here. Then laid in bed all night with stomach cramps. Who knows sometimes. Things could have been better, but it was o.k. Missed my 1:08 for 2007 so I guess I have to keep running next year. Maybe not this race though. It is fast and downhill the first 7 or so but there is a lot of work to do from the golf course or mile 8 in.

Three warm-ups / then standing cool downs due to bus issues. This was maybe a good thing for me because it gave me more time to go potty. However I wouldn't suggest trying it.

1. 5:03

2. 5:05 - Really fast pace for me but feels o.k.

3. 5:16

4. 5:16

5. 5:16- Getting into a nice groove

6. 5:17

7. 5:37- Finish the downhill and start climbing out by the golf course. Here my legs have a hard time making the transition and I never really get it going again.

8. 5:29

9. 5:42- rolling hills on twisty trail

10 .5:41

11. 5:43- I just blew it through here. The rolling hills were hard to dial in and I could tell I wasn't going to catch the 2nd place guy, and that unless something bad happend I'd be o.k. from the pack so I just stayed here. Realisticly I couldn't push harder but wasn't tierd. I just couldn't go fast anymore.

12. 5:41

13. 5:47- Finished up just in time for some hard time in the Porta Jail!

I just sigh trying to explain this race. It's like I know I can run better but come race day I just choke. That is three half marathon's in a row that I've been unsatisfied with the results. In fact the only good race I've had all year was at Boston. Hopefully I can run STGM and just be happy with how I was able to run regardless of time or place. The last two weeks I've felt fantastic and have had some killer training runs, then I just blow it up on a race. Some of it was diet, but not all. Hopefully my theory of myself is true and that is that I'm a better marathon runner than short races.

On a lighter note it was fun to talk to Mike V. and the 2nd place guy (Harmon I think). Mike said he felt like he ran %100 today and way better than in Bryce. I asked him what he felt like the course was compared to Bryce on equal effort and he said maybe one min. The 2nd place guy who ran a 1:08 something said he plans on running a 2:22 at STGM... I guess we will see. I've just got to get some good weeks in and find a way to be under 2:30. You better believe that my diet is going to get cleaned up... starting tomorrow! J/K.

Clyde, congradulations on your race. You are right on with the 8 miles and in being work. By the way, they had gift certificates for the top 3 runners from Runner's Corner. It seems you left before they had them ready.

From Andy on Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 12:51:42

Great job, Clyde. I was also surprised how much work it was from 8 miles on. My wife was talking with your mom near the finish line while they were waiting for everybody to come through. She was sure impressed with what a great runner you have become in such a short time.

From ArmyRunner on Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 17:20:34

Looking great Clyde. Top three at Hobble and a new PR = a good day regardless. St. George is looking better and better, I can't wait to see how everyone on the blog does.

From Jon on Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 23:42:10

Good race- 3rd place is the best place to be, right? But no more garlic fries for you...

From James on Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 23:49:25

I can relate to the bad experiences in half marathons this year. You still ran awesome though. I think you are right where you want to be for St. George!

From christi on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 09:26:18

Congrats on your 3rd place!! I think that's awesome. Now you just know the little tweaks you need to make to get 1st! I'm anticipating Mik'L & Kendra's race reports!

From Dave Holt on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 09:38:29

Hey, taking the good... a new PR despite all the troubles. Good run.

From jtshad on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 09:48:52

Dang, another great time even when you are having all those problems? Good result. You are going to kick some tail at STG.

From Paul Petersen on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 09:51:50

Clyde, good work out there. I know it's easy to second-guess yourself, but sub-1:10 is a good accomplishment and a good PR regardless of how you felt. Plus, you have to leave some room for massive PR's next year! Keep your eye on St. George and your dream race will come together.

By the way, Matt Harmer (2nd place ahead of you) ran Olympic Trials in '04. He ran a high 2:21 at St. George in 2003.

Thanks everyone.

Brent and Andy I wish I would have met you guys in person. It was good to see Chad and Scott B.

Bill (wild bull) got the gift card for me. We had to leave a little early. My wife had just ran the race as well and it was her first one ever. Sitting around at the park was the last thing on her mind.

From Dustin on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 12:13:05

Nice job on the race Clyde. I talked to Bill late Saturday night and he said you guys all ran well. I knew you guys would tear it up. I wish I could have made it work with my schedule. I would like to see where I'm at with my training.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 12:16:13

Clyde - congratulations on the PR. At face value, it predicts around 2:29 in St. George. However, I suspect this did not quite show your true potential. Sometimes it take a couple of races before it really comes out.

Regarding training - the following should get you as close as possible to the trials qualifier if you can handle it - three times a week go at least 15 in one run, with at least 6 of it at a tempo effort (threshold or marathon pace). No track, put all of your energy into the tempos, your speed is OK. Run easy for the rest of the mileage, no 6:30 "easy" runs. And , of course, follow through 100% with your resolution on the diet.

From ArmyRunner on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 12:41:19

Clyde,

I will be in St. George on Monday evening and Tuesday next week the 3rd and 4th and was wondering if I could link up with anyone from the St. George bloggers for an early run on Tuesday morning. Anywhere from 10-15 miles would be great depending on what time we started. I have to be at a meeting at 8:00am so need to be back at the hotel NLT 7:15am. I will be staying in the Ramada Inn on St. George BLVD.

From Superfly on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 12:43:51

Ted I'm sure we can plan something that will work with that. We can start as early as we need to and go where ever. Just touch base next Monday and we'll come up with something.
